Lost Keys No Longer A Problem

Silly as this seems, I do not think that I have met anyone who has not lost their keys at one time or another. Everyone loses their keys, eventually. I have written this article to help you solve that problem so that you never, yes, never lose your keys again. What would you pay for this solution to losing your keys? How much time have you lost due to lost keys? Have you received parking tickets due to lost keys? Have you missed appointments due to lost keys? The list goes on and on.

Yes, I have had experiences where I have temporarily lost my keys in the past, but the problem is solved and I have not lost my keys since I have used the system to solve the problem. First, in case you are one of the rare, few that have never lost your keys, I will go into detail of how these keys get lost in everyday households.

They get lost like this:

Ordinarily, upon entering the house, you might put your keys in your coat pocket; hang your coat up. The next day, perhaps due to weather changes, you wear a different coat; find yourself outside at the car without your car keys. (Many people separate their car keys from their apartment or home keys as a matter of safety. (If your car is hijacked - the robber grabs your keys; then he has only your car keys not the keys to your own apartment or home). So it is possible to misplace your car keys and still have your apartment keys.

You might come in the house and put your keys on the table. Then perhaps someone puts their homework or other thing on top of your keys. You begin to look for them where you last thought you left them, and the keys are overlooked because you never look under the homework or whatever was placed on top of the keys.

You come in with arm loads of groceries and packages, so many that you can not carry any more items. Your keys, dangling, you drop them wherever you drop your packages (They are about to fall anyway), and then forget that is where they are at. When you drop your keys anywhere, most likely you will lose the). Someone else sees them and moves the keys, forgetting to tell you where the keys are.

You bring in your groceries and put your keys on a table; the baby picks them up and then they are temporarily forever lost.

You unlock the door, and immediately place them in your pants or shirt pocket, thinking they will not get lost. Accidentally, the shirt or pants goes into the hamper and there they are again, lost.

These are just a few of the ways that you might temporarily lose your keys. There are probably hundreds of ways you can lose your keys, especially if you have a large, heavy key chain that is cumbersome to carry around. So, how do you solve this problem of losing your keys? Years ago, I read a book by someone named Charles J. Givens (He wrote Wealth Without Risk). In one of his books, Charles wrote about lost keys. He said to have a vase on the table or desk that you use, and immediately throw your keys into that vase as soon as you come into the house. That solves the lost key problem.

Another take on this idea, is to simply install a cup hook or other small hook near your work area in your home. Or if you tend to come in with packages all the time, place this hook right by your front door. That will be your key hook forever.

Now, using either of these two systems you should never, yes, never lose your keys again. Ever since I installed the hook I have not lost my keys, ever, not even once. The ritual is simple: the minute I get inside the door, I place the keys on the hook. And no matter when I am ready to go out, the keys are always there, right where they belong. So that solves your problem of losing your keys inside of your own apartment or home. What do you do about the other places that you might lose your keys?

Solutions to losing your keys outdoors or in public places:

At work, if you are the boss, you can install the hook anywhere you work.

If you are an employee and have no permission to install a hook, you can ask permission or you can use the coffee mug solution. Have a coffee mug on your desk -designated as the key mug. Use the same procedure or method that you would use as if this coffee mug was your cup hook.

Designate your top desk drawer as your key drawer. Never put the keys down unless the drawer is open and your keys go inside there.

If you can safely keep your keys on a long lanyard, do that. It is always harder to lose a long lanyard that it is to lose a small keyring. If you are of the extremely-forgetful type, attach that long lanyard to your belt loop or pocketbook.

The solutions have the same thing in common. The solution is that you stop dropping your keys wherever it is convenient to drop them. It does not matter how many packages you come in with, it does not matter how much time you have, all that matters is that you establish a rule with yourself that your keys go into their key place (whether that key place be a coffee mug, or a hook especially set up for keys). You put time and hurry aside to save a few minutes or hours for yourself. By taking time to put your keys in your key place, you save minutes, hours or sometimes weeks that you ordinarily would be searching for your keys. Weeks? How does anyone lose their keys for weeks? Well, remember that couch cushion that seems to eat up things? Remember the Goonies movie where sox disappeared and everything else disappeared?

One person that I knew placed their keys on the couch next to them while sitting down for a moment to rest after bringing in tons of packages. One thing lead to the next and those keys wound up sliding into the couch cushion opening when no one noticed. So, who would think to look between the couch cushions for the keys? No one noticed the disappearing keys and when he went to locate the keys they were nowhere in site. After looking through the entire house, he finally checked the couch cushions and found the keys. (Some couches have these small openings between the cushions where the keys can easily slip into and get lost).

Friends of mine have even found keys inside their laundry, inside a pair of pants. So they waited until laundry day to find their keys. Imagine all of that time lost? So save yourself that trouble next time, by installing a key hook or designating a key coffee mug today. You will be glad you took this advice. No more lost keys! That's the spirit!
