The Randypeters - Freedom Train

A brief history of the Randypeters circa 1981 to 1985. The band was from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and were anchored by vocalist Pieter Botman, and guitarist Rand Peppler. Along the way, a couple of bass players, and a ton of drummers, served time with the group. Mick Kern (1981-1985) and Derek Campfield (1986-1990) handled the bass duties. The list of drummers probably could take up the entire computer screen. Bill Anderson, Rob Hanson, John Ferguson, Bob Grant, Mark Craig, Gilles Mantha, Bob Grant (again) and finally Gilles Mantha (again). For the record, Rob Hanson and Bob Grant drummed on the songs found on the Blender Mix compilation, and Mark Craig drummed on the tracks found on the Independence Day EP and the Cassettera compilation. Influenced by a mishmash of the Rolling Stones, the Clash, rockabilly, 65/66 Beatles, surf music, and whatever the heck else was on CKCU-FM those days, the Randypeters were a difficult band to pin down, though a roots rock/country/punk hybrid would be accurate. The majority of the songwriting was done by Botman and Peppler, though Kern and Campfield also chipped in with a number of songs. As far as our research indicates, only "Sounds of Children", written by Mark Craig, emerged from the ranks of the drummers. The Randypeters came to life for a Talent Show at Gloucester High School in suburban Ottawa in 1980, and broke up sometime in 1990. Pieter and Rand were members of the same Gloucester swim team, and Pieter and Mick met during Grade ...

The High Cost of Employee Turnover Among Project Managers

Imagine for a moment this scenario from a frustrated Senior Manager of a large pharmaceutical organization: "Our organization has experienced a large turnover among project managers in the past year. This creates problems providing ongoing quality and service to our stakeholders. We just don't know what is causing the problem!" Sound familiar? Well you're not alone. I remember that filmmaker Woody Allen once said that "80% of success is showing up." However, the greater challenge is finding ways to keep people there.

Employee turnover is simply a fact of life in the business world. The days when employees would stay and grow with a company for the duration of their working life are gone. Studies today reveal that individuals stay with their current employer a maximum of five years before moving on. While 0% turnover is simply unrealistic, increased turnover in your organization could indicate a serious problem in your working environment.

In a random poll of project managers conducted for this article, the following reasons were given for high turnover among project managers at organizations today:

o Internal communication problems

o Poor time management

o Trouble scheduling and controlling staff

o Lack of project manager authority and experience

o Poor staff training

o No project management tools/systems

o Monetary compensation

Organizations are in a constant state of restructuring. The demand for experienced and dedicated project managers is on the rise, however it seems that less experienced personnel are attracted to the profession. So then why do some organizations experience increased turnover?

Generally speaking, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics recently found that 40% of those that quit their jobs were doing so because they simply felt a lack of appreciation, of teamwork, that the organization was perceived to not care about employees. Serious charges from 40% of the people.

As of February 2005, the average turnover rate in the United States was 3.1%. And while that number seems low, when you think about how many employed individuals there are in the United States alone that number can be staggering. And yet many organizations let turnover go undetected.

CEO's just accept it as part of doing business in today's competitive marketplace. But more cost conscious and successful organizations will see the negative cost factors that turnover inevitably will have on productivity, quality and service.

F. Leigh Branham believes there are Six Truths About Employee Turnover. They are as follows:

1. Turnover Happens

2. Some Turnover Can be Desirable

3. Turnover is Costly

4. More Money is NOT Always the Answer

5. Management Holds the Key to Keeping Talent

6. Reducing Turnover Starts with Commitment

All of the above information while general can also be applied to the profession of the project manager.

The Domino Effect

The loss of a project manager during any phase of the project can signal disaster. Many times while the methodologies for managing projects are set forth by the PMO (Project Management Office), individuals have their own unique system for completing tasks and organizing workloads. Therefore, the ramp up time associated with trying to decipher how an individual works can bring the project to a screeching halt. Project staff members find themselves asking the following questions after a project manager departs:

o Where did they leave off?

o Who were their contacts?

o Were they organized?

o Will there be ramp up time associated with understanding their job?

o Were they on schedule or will you need to bring the project up to speed?

o Is it more cost effective to divide the work or train someone new?

o Have stakeholders been notified of any new developments?

o Has the budget been adhered to?

In fact the departure of a project manager influences all of the following:

Scope - What needs to get done

Time - Ramp up increases

Cost - Overtime and training

Quality - Deadlines effect final outcome

Communication - Promises made cannot always be kept

Procurement - Poor choice of outside vendors

So how then can turnover be prevented among project managers? As we discussed in the beginning, 0% turnover is improbable. Limited turnover however can be viewed as desirable for organizations. For instance new employees are bound to bring new ideas and methods with them thus revitalizing what might have been a stale environment to work in.

But turnover in and of itself is not fully understood. Many organizations fail to realize the high costs associated with turnover at many levels. Turnover can become a financial burden to your organization with recruitment and selection costs, training for new employees, ramp-up time, increased work loads for existing employees, overtime, reduced productivity and that's just naming a few. In fact it costs a company approximately 1/3 of a new hire's salary to replace an employee. If more organizations took the time to view turnover as a financial hit rather than passing it off as part of day to day business life they might save their organizations ten's of thousands of dollars.

There are ways to not only reduce the amount of turnover at your organization but also to be prepared for it. In the random poll of project managers conducted for this article, the following suggestions were given as ways to reduce the amount of turnover among project managers:

o Offer training opportunities to increase knowledge areas

o Assess the changing workforce culture

o Measure the companies turnover rate

o Become more employee oriented

o Hire the right people

o Set up effective Change Management

While change in inevitable in an organization, you can be prepared. Issues arise in the normal course of project activities and timely resolutions are essential to maintaining project timelines and team momentum as well as keeping stakeholders happy. Change Management practices can help. A Change Management plan with immediate response that can be implemented quickly will have a greater chance for project success and thus have less overall impact on the project's progression. Change Management can help:

o Reduce productivity loss

o Encourage employees who might be resistant to change

o Minimize impact on productivity and quality

o Reduce the effect on stakeholders

Left unmanaged issues can derail or even cause an entire project to fail. Some questions to ask when developing a Change Management plan are:

o Responsibility breakdown

o Additional training required

o How much ramp up time will there be?

o Replacement of personnel - internal?

o Overtime required

o Who can make a lateral move?

A Change Management plan for employee turnover translates into a rapid, cost effective solution so projects can be delivered on time, on budget and on scope without effecting stakeholders.

Measuring Turnover at Your Organization

Many organizations have little knowledge of the turnover rate at their organization. Moreover, they are unaware of the hidden costs that turnover can place on an organization once an employee leaves. Measuring turnover is done simply and should be done yearly with the following formula:

Turnover cost can also be measured and should be reviewed on a bi-yearly basis. The formula below will help you to calculate turnover cost:

Even with all of this new found data, the answers to why employee turnover may be a problem at your organization are still unclear. Moreover exit interviews will not give you the feedback you are looking for since the most common reason given for leaving an organization is always more money and a better job.

It is up to management to take the time to be critical and look inward. Understand that a problem exists. High turnover is a warning sign, a red flag that there are internal problems within your organization, some of which might be caused by senior management. While the turnover of a few employees can hardly be considered reason to be concerned, high turnover rates should make you question the working environment that your organization provides both emotionally, physically and financially. Ask yourself these questions:

· Are employees managed the way I would want to be managed?

· Are employees monetarily and emotionally compensated?

· Is the organization viewed as employee oriented?

It used to be that an employee was devoted and loyal to one company during the duration of their employment. Today however employees are looking out for themselves more focused on their quality of life and the needs of their family. That means that organizations today must motivate and inspire individuals to want to stay. Engaging and empowering employees is one of the great assets you have in the fight to reduce employee turnover. Data gathered by Development Dimensions International (DDI) shows that companies or businesses with highly engaged employees experience a lower turnover rate. How does your organization stack up?

· Listen to employees

· Treat employees with respect

· Praise a job well done

· Ask employees for their input

· Show trust with more responsibility

· Be fair and impartial

· Be firm but not tyrannical

· Apologize or admit when wrong

· Pleasant working condition

· Room for advancement

While there is no one answer to the issue of employee turnover there are many proven suggestions on how to limit the chances of it happening at your organization. We tend to forget that the people working for us are typically the ones getting the job done from start to finish. We rely on their knowledge, their skills and most of all their commitment to perform top quality work in a timely fashion. As an employer, take the time to show your appreciation to those that work so hard to make your business a success. Most importantly listen to their needs and find ways to show that you're committed to them. 80% of success is showing up; make the other 20% increasing the ways you make them stay.

High-Speed Internet - Choosing the Best High-Speed Internet Service

Once you determine you're going to get a high-speed connection to the Internet, the choices are more than a little overwhelming. Your decision to leave dial-up was straightforward, but now you've unearthed a treasure trove of speeds, deals and incentives. Here is how to evaluate which service is best for you.

First, understand there are really three different types of services you'll be investigating: providers of high-speed Internet service include companies that provide satellite, phone (in the form of Digital Subscriber Line or DSL) and cable services. Second, realize that some of the information overload here results from the fact that just because you have cable TV doesn't mean you have to go with the cable company's high-speed Internet offerings; likewise, many phone companies also offer various options. You can generally mix and match. However, if you have cable television, you won't be selecting satellite service, and vice versa. But you could select the phone company's service regardless of your television setup. Third, and finally, know your budget and get a grasp of what each service includes. Remember, too, price isn't the only factor.

Overall, there are a number of factors to consider when purchasing a high-speed Internet provider

Availability. In many markets, there are still limited offerings. You may not have much of a choice depending on where you live. If you have options, the next step is to check out the plans each provider offers. Digital Landing is a great place to start.

Buy what you need. Go into this decision knowing what you need - don't settle for less but don't buy what you do not need. Few people actually need the top speeds offered, but do note both download and upload speeds. If you're a shutterbug you'll need and want faster upload times.

Check out the bundles of multiple services. Once you know how fast a connection you'll want to purchase, investigate the bundles offered. It may make sense to get a digital voice phone deal, or perhaps the phone company offers an unlimited calling plan that is more reasonably priced.

How satisfied are your neighbors with their service? Finally, investigate the company's reputation. Are customers generally happy? Try to find a customer satisfaction surveys. Customer care can be particularly important if you're planning on installing equipment yourself. And there's no better time to find out how providers treat their customers than before you become one.

Satellite Connections

Certain sparsely populated areas of the country have limited choices for Internet connection. Some remote locales have no cable television because it's far too costly to run cable. So, the choice for high-speed Internet in those areas is between the phone company and the satellite provider(s). DSL, too, is not available everywhere. Ironically, many areas that are mountainous only offer satellite because they are so remote and sparsely populated, although mountains can block your signal if the receiver (dish) is not correctly positioned. In areas that do offer cable, some people choose satellite TV mainly for the diversity of programming (you can just about watch anything at any time). When there is a choice, however, bear in mind that satellite connections are affected by cloud cover, weather and geography

DSL

Your phone company may offer up to two different high-speed Internet technologies, called DSL and fiber optic service or FIOS. You can get a DSL hookup for about what you pay for dial-up service. The good thing about DSL is that you can install it anywhere in your home where you have a phone jack.

However, because DSL runs along phone lines (though it does not interfere with your making phone calls, as dial-up does), it is slower than cable.

Fiber optics (FIOS)

The phony companies also offer services over fiber optic cable, called FIOS by Verizon. The FIOS service, if available, is the fastest service, but it is also more expensive than DSL. You have to replace the copper wiring connection from your home to the street with fiber optics. It is only available in a limited number of areas.

Cable

Cable companies seemingly invented the triple-play concept. Prices vary widely from area to area. Frequently promotional rates start as low as the $19.99 per month deal currently offered by Comcast. But those increase -- often doubling--after the introductory period ends. Be sure to understand how long your contract is and for how long the promotion is in effect. Also, some rates are for new customers only; if you have cable TV with the company already you may not be considered "new." Further, you may have to agree to install the cable modem yourself for the low rate. Like the phone companies, email and storage are provided with the service; in general, they are simply benefits of joining and are unlikely to make or break a deal.

Theoretically, cable is faster than DSL. In fact, the Optimum Online service offered through Cablevision boasts download speeds of 15 Mbps - five times faster than a fast DSL connection. So why say "theoretically" faster? Because cable slows down when many people in a neighborhood are online at once; DSL offers consistency

The good news is that cable companies are currently working with new technologies to resolve the issue of slow downs due to heavy usage. If you already have cable TV, many cable providers will offer discounted packages or 'bundles' combining your TV, Internet and even your telephone service to encourage you to utilize them for combined services. This means paying just one bill for all of those services and calling just one company for help when any of those things go wrong.

A final word on speed

Your high-speed Internet service provider may offer a variety of speeds at different price points. Which speed is right for you will vary depending upon your usage and your expectations.

The good news is no additional equipment or changes to your computer are necessary to upgrade your speed (if offered) from your provider. A simple phone call is all it takes and the change to your service (and your bill) typically takes affect within 24 hours.

Lost Keys No Longer A Problem

Silly as this seems, I do not think that I have met anyone who has not lost their keys at one time or another. Everyone loses their keys, eventually. I have written this article to help you solve that problem so that you never, yes, never lose your keys again. What would you pay for this solution to losing your keys? How much time have you lost due to lost keys? Have you received parking tickets due to lost keys? Have you missed appointments due to lost keys? The list goes on and on.

Yes, I have had experiences where I have temporarily lost my keys in the past, but the problem is solved and I have not lost my keys since I have used the system to solve the problem. First, in case you are one of the rare, few that have never lost your keys, I will go into detail of how these keys get lost in everyday households.

They get lost like this:

Ordinarily, upon entering the house, you might put your keys in your coat pocket; hang your coat up. The next day, perhaps due to weather changes, you wear a different coat; find yourself outside at the car without your car keys. (Many people separate their car keys from their apartment or home keys as a matter of safety. (If your car is hijacked - the robber grabs your keys; then he has only your car keys not the keys to your own apartment or home). So it is possible to misplace your car keys and still have your apartment keys.

You might come in the house and put your keys on the table. Then perhaps someone puts their homework or other thing on top of your keys. You begin to look for them where you last thought you left them, and the keys are overlooked because you never look under the homework or whatever was placed on top of the keys.

You come in with arm loads of groceries and packages, so many that you can not carry any more items. Your keys, dangling, you drop them wherever you drop your packages (They are about to fall anyway), and then forget that is where they are at. When you drop your keys anywhere, most likely you will lose the). Someone else sees them and moves the keys, forgetting to tell you where the keys are.

You bring in your groceries and put your keys on a table; the baby picks them up and then they are temporarily forever lost.

You unlock the door, and immediately place them in your pants or shirt pocket, thinking they will not get lost. Accidentally, the shirt or pants goes into the hamper and there they are again, lost.

These are just a few of the ways that you might temporarily lose your keys. There are probably hundreds of ways you can lose your keys, especially if you have a large, heavy key chain that is cumbersome to carry around. So, how do you solve this problem of losing your keys? Years ago, I read a book by someone named Charles J. Givens (He wrote Wealth Without Risk). In one of his books, Charles wrote about lost keys. He said to have a vase on the table or desk that you use, and immediately throw your keys into that vase as soon as you come into the house. That solves the lost key problem.

Another take on this idea, is to simply install a cup hook or other small hook near your work area in your home. Or if you tend to come in with packages all the time, place this hook right by your front door. That will be your key hook forever.

Now, using either of these two systems you should never, yes, never lose your keys again. Ever since I installed the hook I have not lost my keys, ever, not even once. The ritual is simple: the minute I get inside the door, I place the keys on the hook. And no matter when I am ready to go out, the keys are always there, right where they belong. So that solves your problem of losing your keys inside of your own apartment or home. What do you do about the other places that you might lose your keys?

Solutions to losing your keys outdoors or in public places:

At work, if you are the boss, you can install the hook anywhere you work.

If you are an employee and have no permission to install a hook, you can ask permission or you can use the coffee mug solution. Have a coffee mug on your desk -designated as the key mug. Use the same procedure or method that you would use as if this coffee mug was your cup hook.

Designate your top desk drawer as your key drawer. Never put the keys down unless the drawer is open and your keys go inside there.

If you can safely keep your keys on a long lanyard, do that. It is always harder to lose a long lanyard that it is to lose a small keyring. If you are of the extremely-forgetful type, attach that long lanyard to your belt loop or pocketbook.

The solutions have the same thing in common. The solution is that you stop dropping your keys wherever it is convenient to drop them. It does not matter how many packages you come in with, it does not matter how much time you have, all that matters is that you establish a rule with yourself that your keys go into their key place (whether that key place be a coffee mug, or a hook especially set up for keys). You put time and hurry aside to save a few minutes or hours for yourself. By taking time to put your keys in your key place, you save minutes, hours or sometimes weeks that you ordinarily would be searching for your keys. Weeks? How does anyone lose their keys for weeks? Well, remember that couch cushion that seems to eat up things? Remember the Goonies movie where sox disappeared and everything else disappeared?

One person that I knew placed their keys on the couch next to them while sitting down for a moment to rest after bringing in tons of packages. One thing lead to the next and those keys wound up sliding into the couch cushion opening when no one noticed. So, who would think to look between the couch cushions for the keys? No one noticed the disappearing keys and when he went to locate the keys they were nowhere in site. After looking through the entire house, he finally checked the couch cushions and found the keys. (Some couches have these small openings between the cushions where the keys can easily slip into and get lost).

Friends of mine have even found keys inside their laundry, inside a pair of pants. So they waited until laundry day to find their keys. Imagine all of that time lost? So save yourself that trouble next time, by installing a key hook or designating a key coffee mug today. You will be glad you took this advice. No more lost keys! That's the spirit!

You Lost Your Cellular Phone? Never Do That Again!

Happiness can be a small event, a small habit or it can be a grand event. Only you know what brings you happiness in your life. But one of the most simplest things that we can do in our lives can bring us little bits of happiness. You do not have to spend money on this one. Just look into your life and realize what makes you unhappy and then work to change it so that you are happy. This article is mostly about cellular phones and the joy or un-joy that they bring into our lives.

First problem with cellular phones is that they are so tiny, and thus they are easily lost. This problem is solved very easily once you decide that this is what you want to do. Yes, the stores sell all sorts of gadgets and devices to help you find your lost cellular phone but wouldn't you rather just not lose it in the first place. Prevention is always better than solving a problem after ti happens.

So, keeping tabs on a cellular phone is easier than you think. Take these steps to keep your phone to yourself. Doing one or all of these steps will assure that you will always know where your phone is at all times.

Never put your cellular phone down unless you are putting it down in its' proper place.
Know where the proper place is. For example, you might have a small decorative cellular phone holder in your home or in your car. Use that all the time, not just some of the time.
When going outdoors, make sure you have a regular place for your phone. In other words, if you are traveling in a car, there should be one designated place that is solely for the cellular phone. When you get in the car, put your phone in the glove compartment or in the console compartment. Or attached your portable cellular phone holder to the empty seatbelt in your car. Or have a catch-it-all box on the seat of your car and always place the phone there the minute that you get into the car.
When shopping, never put the cellular phone anywhere but in your place or pocket. If the phone rings while you are on line at the store, leave the phone where it is and check it after you leave the store. This will help you keep your phone. So many people take their phones out and leave them in supermarkets and department stores.
Use a beeper-like cellular phone finder. This is for the hard cases that always lose their phones. Attach the beeping keychain to your phone and then all you need to do is clap your hands to find your phone.
ALWAYS leave your cell-phone charged and on . If you do lose the phone temporarily, you just call the phone and listen for the ring tones in your home or in your car. It is so easy to locate a phone like this. And keeping the phone charged and in the on position will help you do this.

These are just some helpful hints on how to keep your phone for yourself.

Are You Ready To Produce A Weekly Show?

What is required of someone doing a weekly show? (This article updated March 14, 2008, Friday)

First Steps: Before you need anything else, before you think or do anything else regarding your future weekly show, you need to know that the most important asset you have, more than any camera equipment, is your commitment to do a show that is available to be aired every single week of the year. This means that your show will air during holiday times; it will air during any family crisis times, and it will continue to air even in times when you are not physically able to tape another show for a few days or weeks. You must have that type of commitment to your show and to yourself so that your show goes on, no matter what. That is your biggest asset and your biggest stepping stone that leads you to have a successful weekly show. If you have serious doubts about your ability to commit to have these shows ready, and delivered on time, to the studio, then you need to reconsider your decision and perhaps continue to do specials for a while. There will be a time when you are ready and able to do the weekly show. Do not rush into it, but do it in your own time. If you have decided that you are ready to make this deal with yourself and with your studio, then trudge onward, be prepared, be alert, and be precise and on time as you journey into the adventure of weekly show spots on your own television program guide.

Do Specials First: First bit of advice that I would give to you is that you submit a number of specials first before embarking on the journey of doing a regular weekly show. That will give you hands-on training and you will gain confidence also. Lots of people ask about equipment. They ask if you need very expensive equipment to produce a weekly television show. That is a good question and the answer is very complicated. The key to producing a weekly show is more about organizing, creativity, and also about confidence. You cannot produce a weekly show if you have no confidence to do so. So perhaps your first lesson in television production (in the case of weekly shows) would be confidence 101. You have to know that you can do it and the only way you know that you can do it is if you finally admit to yourself that you want to produce a weekly show. Once you admit that you are free to accept yourself as producer and to go on to the very next step.

The next step is organization, but even more so, thinking about organization. Think about everything you will need in order to be successful at producing a weekly show. You need a host or co-host, or talent or someone who will be on air for you. Then you need a number of producers to help you out. (You will fare better in this area if you have already helped many other producers on their own shows). You need a plan. Perhaps writing everything down will help.

Some Organizing Tools: :

A notepad to write your creative ideas in.

A notepad or address book or organizing book to hold all of your appointments and show records.

pens, pencils, highlighters, sticky notes

Some artistic signs or posters (for the walls during your show); perhaps some books or other decorative items that make it YOUR show.

Folders and blank papers, some stationery and envelopes.

Those are beginnings. You do not need all of these to begin; These are just suggestions. You take what you can use and leave the rest of the information right there. One of the most helpful organizing tools that I have found are scan cards . They come under the listing of executive gallery online. These are little cards, about half the size of index cards and they are placed inside a folder or binder. Each of your projects (or shows) has one card. If your show is complicated, you might have a card for each section of your show . For example, one card might list all the producers who will work for the show and the other card might list the sequence of what will happen on the show. This system is quite comfortable to handle and it is a very useful organizing tool

What About Cameras? Notice, I have not even mentioned camera equipment yet? Well, you need to be committed and organized long before you seek out a camera. So organize your timing, your show, your guests, talent, hosts and everything in between long before you even think about cameras. Usually the Public Equipment office at the community access station will have all the equipment that you will need. I will write about cameras in another article that I will publish in the future.

Then, so what is your plan? Do you plan to do a weekly show by taping a show at the studio every single week? If that is the case, you will be there almost forever, between locating other producers and finding talent. This is a large, long and hard task. It is not impossible but it is most difficult especially for beginners. Do you have a better plan than that?

Combine Studio and Field Tapings: You can possibly shoot some shows in the studio and then shoot some shows outdoors. Many producers use this system. It gets things done and they wind up with a weekly show and plenty of time to do it in. So, you can plan to shoot twice a month in the studio, and if you plan right and are lucky, you can shoot both shows inside the studio on the very same day. Reserve two spots and tape two shows. As you get more advanced, if the staff permits and you have time, you might be able to tape three shows in one day. (This all depends on your regulations at the studio. Inquire with staff or ask for the manual. Do you plan to do field shows? If you do this, you will need to take the field course at the studio (unless you plan to use all of your own equipment). So, take the course or buy your own equipment. Now, you are making progress.

Develop Skill: t is my honest belief that if you have enough training in field photography, you can do a weekly show with a small, hand-held camera that is not too expensive. Of course, better equipment is always wonderful to use and to have, but if you must use an inexpensive camera, then do it, rather then hold your show back. You have great ideas, and good creativity, now go put it to work on your weekly show. If you hone your photography skills, your steady camera skills, your keen eye and your creativity, you can produce a show with minimal equipment, if that is your goal. To learn more about having and producing a weekly community access show, read some of my other articles. I will be writing more articles on this topic in the near future.

Equipment: Though it is not the equipment that does or finishes the show, having your own equipment will help you continue to have a weekly show. (When you have your own equipment, you can film some shows in the field and some in the studio). The way this helps you continue and maintain a weekly show is that you have your equipment with you at all times. You might accidentally happen across an unadvertised event that you can film. (Always ask permission to film outdoors in private spaces. Most times you are not permitted to film shows, concerts and things like that without express prior permission). In fact, in some places and during some events, filming without permission can be a felony or some other crime. That is why you see copyright notices all over creative works, movies and television shows. Be sure, when filming no private property or when you film during any official performances -i.e. concerts, that you have proper permission to do so. I will write about obtaining permission in some later articles. You can subscribe to my articles to be sure that you do not miss any of them.

Begin with Basics: If you do not have your own equipment and you are considering purchasing some, note that you do not have to buy the most expensive equipment there is. Basic equipment is fine for a beginner producer. Seriously, use basics to start and then decide whether you need more equipment to do more shows. Do not listen to anyone that tells you that you cannot begin with basic equipment. You can! You can purchase a small video camera (that uses mini-dv tapes), a monopod (not a total necessity but a nice addition), and with one more thing you are ready to do your field shows. (I will discuss that one more thing in another later article. I recommend having your own equipment if you are a beginner at doing weekly shows. The reason for this is that you will save hours and hours of time by using your own equipment. You will not have to reserve equipment to do shows, and that alone saves you weeks of time at the end of the year.

Start With Minimal Expense: You can begin with a camera that is under $400. That is correct. You do not have to begin with a camera that costs thousands of dollars. If you have a good eye, steady hand, and a monopod, you can begin for under $400. The key to good production is not always expensive equipment, but it is more attitude, eye, respect, creativity, and dedication to the direction that you choose. The key is persistence, using good goals and organizing skills, good networking, a strong faith, and more persistence. If you can manage those, you can make it in community access television without the major expense of high-priced cameras and other equipment.

Note About Minimal Equipment: In order to get by with minimal equipment, you need to have some experience in photography or some prior training. If you are coming into television production cold, with no art, background or production experience at all, it might be harder for you with the minimal equipment. I suggest that you read up on photography at the least, even if you have not been to photography school. Check out these two series of books, the Kodak series and also any and all books by John Hedgecoe. I highly recommend John Hedgecoe books because he takes awesome photos, but also is a great teacher. His illustrations, instructions, and everything else he packages in his books are well worth the money. If you cannot afford to buy these books new, look for them at garage sales. Most libraries will have at least one John Hedgecoe book. I have not yet seen a library that does not have one, two or three of them. I believe he is the best that a beginner can learn from, and professionals too, can refresh their memory and solidify their technique by checking out John Hedgecoe.

You can take a short course at most any CUNY college or the longer course at NYI in New York City. Any photography or art class will help you improve your show, especially when using minimal equipment.

Why Do You Write? And, Where is Your Comment?

Writing is one of the many communication tools that we have and it is probably the most lasting one. Think about it. You can put things on disks, and on cassettes and even on cds and dvds, and most likely that medium would be outdated soon. Just from what we know about history, writing will last a long time. If you doubt that look in the museums that show us what the cavemen wrote on their walls. You can view their pictures --which was their original form of writing, and yet they have not been around for a ton of years.

Want to make a lasting impression, write something! Forget the technology of trying to put things on cassettes and on other things and realize that your written word could last forever. And perhaps that is why we should be careful about what we write, because the words will last practically forever. Ask any Playboy bunny whose picture and story is in that magazine, yes, the written word has lasticity!

So why do you write? What do you hope to accomplish by writing here or at any other website or for any other magazine or newspaper? Some write for fame, others write just to see their words in print. While still others write to let their voice be heard throughout the world. Yes, your voice will be heard throughout the world. You can write it --and then spread it on the net. Yes, with the help of some technology, you can have your written words read by almost anyone. What a difference there is --now and between those years that were pre-computer. We have the power to spread ideas, information and all sorts of knowledge, and inspiration.

Are you taking advantage of this power of the written word?

Why do you write?

If you wrote an article, would you want to know that somebody was reading it? So , how do I know that you are reading this? One way that I know is by the statistics that Ezine provides about all of my articles. But an even more rewarding way is to hear from readers like you.

Will you please contribute some of your own writing, here, just a note, perhaps an idea, a suggestion? Even a criticism is so welcome. At least I will know it is you that are reading my words.

Want to see more good articles? and on what topics?

Write a note and just suggest a topic and I will be more than glad to write about that topic. That is a challenge for you and a challenge for me. What do you want to hear about? Thanks for reading and thank you for writing!

Updated May 10, 2008 Added Note: I want to thank everyone who has been making comments on this and other articles. Sincerely, I do appreciate your comments. And, know that I appreciate the notes whether or not you agree or disagree with any article. I look forward to comments. I do this because it is with your comments, you, the reader, that I can improve, check, change and update articles whenever it is appropriate.

Phone First, Save Time, Have a Good Vacation!

Use Your Organizational Skills When Planning Vacations!

When you think of vacation, even of a day vacation, you never stop to think that ordinary, organizational skill are necessary or that they would be of use when planning a spur-of-the-moment day trip. But trust me with this, organization helps every time, each and every day, in no matter what you are planning and having a phone and using that phone, works!

Zoos Rock!

When is the last time that you have been to a zoo? Okay, so today, they might call these places Wildlife Conservation Centers, but for all intensive purposes we describe them as zoos. And when did you go there last? For me, it has been about two years. And I remember the day that I went there too. I had a special goal in mind. For me, I wanted to visit the zoo to see the panthers.

Leaving New York, Traveling To Pennsylvania, Just for the Big Cats!

So, I left New York State and drove all the way to the Philadelphia Zoo to see these beautiful panthers.

I arrive there and went to search for the panthers. Of course I would see all the other animals too but my goal was the panthers. There it was, the sign, it was posted there saying that the panthers were away. Imagine that? Coming from NYS to Pennsylvania to see panthers that were not even in the zoo.

That was the day that I learned my phone lesson. Phone first. Phone ahead if you are going to another state for the specific purpose of one thing. Had I phoned ahead I would have known that my panthers were not in town. And in a way, I am glad that I did not phone because I got to see the PA zoo for the first time. Now that was a great experience. I did get to see the free-running peacock and wow, I did get to see him spread his tail. That was worth the trip.

So, even though I had a great time at the zoo, I did learn the lesson that using a phone saves time and saves travel and in a day when gas is about over four dollars a gallon, using the phone saves gasoline.

Phone first!

WABC Yanks Signal Off Of Cablevision

At 12:01 AM on March 7, 2010, after Disney has been unable to come to agreement with Cablevision, WABC pulls its signal off of their systems - but not before two scrolls, followed by a full-screen chyron, reading: "Cablevision has betrayed you again. First HGTV & Food Network, now you've lost ABC7. Enough is Enough!" Ironically, this happened in the middle of an episode of "Lost." Apparently, WABC experiences some technical difficulties in removing their signal after showing the chyron, as the audio cuts out briefly before another minute or so of regular programming. The signal finally cuts off at around 12:04 AM.

Bunnies and Cats Do Not Mix - Keep Them Separate

You, most times, cannot raise rabbits and cats at the same time unless you plan to keep the rabbits in cages. So decide which of these you want to have as pets and stick to the one. Why do I say you should not raise rabbits and cats? Well, they are pretty much natural enemies even if your cat looks lovingly at the little bunny, you need to remember that the cat is a cat and the rabbit is a rodent. It is simple as that.

You would not put a cat and mouse in the same room if they were both loose, correct? Well, you would if you wanted the cat to have a mouse meal or if you were looking to catch the mouse, but as pets, you would not want to raise these in the same room or same area.

Even if the bunny is inside a cage, you have a good chance of having the cat find the bunny out of the cage one day and that is the end of the bunny. Yes, in the past, bunnies have gotten out of the cages and cats have caught them. (I have not had this experience myself but I know of someone who had the experience). Trust me with this one, do not raise bunnies and cats or kittens in the same space.

If you insist that you must have both at the same time, try this:

1. Have your bunny outdoors in a hutch-type environment.

2. Keep the cat indoors.

3. You can help the bunny stay warm in winter by putting the hutch very close to the house to block the great winds and bad weather. You can use tarps to partially block the wind or use blocks of hay to block the wind.

That is about the only way to safely raise a bunny and cat at the same time. Tried it other ways? Try it this way, keep them totally separate; it is the only way. Even if your bunny and cat seem to be friends, the key words here are seem to be!
