Marching Towards Truth, Always A Great Goal

This week has been rough for me. Wow. That is a first. I rarely admit things like that and rarely admit that anything goes wrong in my life. For the most part, I have been taught to keep a smile on my face and make sure that no one knows that I am having a hard time. But today, I admit, this past week has been rough. It feels good to say that out loud. It almost makes things easier for me. And if I had remembered my first teachings, that truth and honesty must prevail, I would have known that it is okay for me to reveal that, that the past week has been rough. So there, I have said it and just saying it out loud makes me feel a little better. And of course, the fact that one week is over makes me feel better also. So what do you do when you have a rough week? Do you think about it, fret, cry, run away from your situation? Or do you stand fast, stand strong, and run diligently into the present with your sword of truth, faith and love drawn to block off any more upcoming problems? What do you do when you are having a rough week?

Some dive into the darkness of twisting tales and running away. Others jump into their horse and buggies and run away to vacation to renew their spirits for a while. (Truth is that taking rests and vacations are a great way to handle stress. So while you are away, get closer to God, hear his voice, his teachings, read the Bible, and remember why you are on vacation. Your vacation will be your temporary retreat. We all need temporary retreats. These small ponds of water in the deserts of life are some of what keeps us serene and able to deal with the rest of life. So, yes, take a short vacation.

Still others stand in the spot where they are and they do not move a muscle as they turn their hearts, heads, minds and spirits towards the Heaven and speak their mind telling God what the problem is and asking Him to handle the situation.

What do you do? Which direction do you run in? Which path do you take? Whatever your path, always be sure that it is, indeed, your path. At times of stress and trauma, we, as humans tend to be people-pleasers - out of sheer exhaustion and tend to be copy-cats out of not really knowing what the best thing to do is. No matter what your situation, do not resort to copying or people-pleasing because both of those will be your downfall eventually. God begs us to be original. He pleads with us to be ourselves, to stray from the madding crowd. He wants us to be the children of God that we were born to be and that means being original and being true to God and true to ourselves. That was easy. You have your problem totally figured out now. Hand it over. And be blessed, God is near you and waiting to assist you in all your troubles, you just need to turn your head in His direction and let Him know you notice Him. That was easy! Like that little round red button that Staples sells, that was easy!

Problem solved, now what do you do? March forward into life with a new meaning, a new direction and a new instruction for hard times, crisis times and any trauma that might be in your present and in your future! March forward into faith, and you cannot fail anywhere.

And while marching forward into faith, walk through the canals of truth; making sure that you are honest with everyone that you meet. Be honest. To help you along, I have a few quotes here, all about truth. I reprint them here in the spirit of the fair use principal of copyrighting, and hope you enjoy all the words, meanings and thoughts that these quotations bring forward into your life.

From About.com

A small collection of quotes.

Miguel de Cervantes

Truth indeed rather alleviates than hurts, and will always bear up against falsehood, as oil does above water.

Sir Winston Churchill

Truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it and ignorance may deride it, but, in the end, there it is.

Brian Tracy

Truthfulness is the main element of character

More Thoughts From Me, the author of this Ezine@articles writing:

All of my life, I have believed in the truth. Before the age of seven, my grandfather taught me that what is true is good, and that I should try my best to tell the truth at all times. I know, as a human being, I am not perfect and I know as a human, it is impossible to be one hundred percent true in every single thing that I say and do. But the difference in me is that because I strive to be honest and truthful, that means that most times I am honest and truthful. And in those times that I am not, it is purely by accident, and in the end, I come forward and admit my mistakes, and that swings me back to honesty.

Betta Fish Are Better Than Any Other Fish! Siamese Fighting Fish Rock!

Wow. Life is different and life is wonderful. And life is so totally interesting when it comes to the different ways to feed fish. I am not talking about the kinds of fish food specifically but more about how you feed the fish. How you feed your fish make the difference between their vitality, their color, their health and their life. How you feed them also makes a difference in their personality, and in the way they swim all through their tank.

Feeding Methods:

You can feed them by just flinging food into the tank from any direction or you can be more precise and feed from the same spot always. By feeding from that same corner of the tank y ou are actually training your fish. You are giving them some stability. They eventually learn that this particular area is their food, meals area and they look forward to coming there when they see you approach the tank. I know this from personal experience. I had a small fish one day. Long ago, I had purchased a stunning Siamese Fighting Fish (a/k/a Betta), and I decided to treat this fish differently than the way that they treat them in the pet stores. I did not believe the hype that these fish love to be in those tiny, confined bowls. So my special treat for this fish was a huge, ten-gallon tank just for this Betta. The fish loved his new home, was very happy in there. I decorate the home with some natural plants, and small decoration. (Be careful with the decorations. It is temping to get ornate, but you need to remember that the more decorations you put inside of the tank , the more swimming and living space that you take away from your fish. The best decorations are sold in pet stores.

Fish Need A Hiding Place:

Find one that has a space or tunnel where the fish can hide in. That is an excellent choice. You give your fish the choice of daylight or darkness and a space that he calls his own hiding space. Anyway, back to my fish. I walked over to the ten-gallon tank each day to feed him. He soon just came to the feeding corner whenever he saw me approaching from that direction. This was his greeting to me, Hi, I am here!

By feeding a Betta in this way you can actually get really friendly with him. And he will not live up to his name fighting, but he will become friendly to you. I was able to train my fish like this and he would come to me, come to the top of the water where I would be able to pet him. He loved that. Imagine petting your own fish? Most people do not pet their fish. And most fish will not come to the top for you to pet them. But follow these instructions and you might just have a petting Betta fish.

Steps to Pet Happiness:

· Buy a Betta.

· Give him a 10 or 20 gallon tank, whichever you can afford to have or keep up.

· Feed him the same time every day.

· Feed him from the same feeding corner.

You Have Trained Your Betta!

· After feeding him like this for a month or two, you can try and pet him as he comes to the surface for food. Pet him once then feed him.

This most times, works. It worked for me. Now this is something that you have learned about fish that the pet store guy will NOT tell you. Keep reading my articles for more interesting facts about fish and other pets.

A Great Camping List For You

Some items that will make camping easier:

First, if at all possible, bring a friend or family member and that will give you double fun. If not camp alone but bring along everything that you need.

Cord - lots of cord. Make sure you bring enough cord to hold your tent down, plus a little extra.

Tent stakes - That will prevent your tent from rolling or flying away in windy weather.

Flashlights - You'll always need one of these even if you like camping in the dark. In the middle of the night if you are looking for something in your tent, you'll not find it without a flashlight. And, if you hear a noise in the middle of the night, the best thing to do is immediately put your flashlight on. This lets everyone know that you are in your tent, and that your equipment and tent is being watched.

Water, bring lots of water to drink. Camping is the easiest way to get started on a new healthy way of living. With the stores and the soda pops far away , you have no excuse to not drink water. So , hydrate yourself and keep yourself healthy.

Extra set of car keys: You don't want to get locked out of your car on the last day of your camping trip. [Yes, that's when it will happen]. Keep the extra set of car keys ON your person , not in the car.

Majic candles: Remember those trick birthday candles that you used to use when you were a child? Well, these candles are the perfect things to bring along on a camping trip. When you are lighting your lanterns or lighting your fires, it will be convenient if you light them with a candle instead of a match. These 'majic" candles won't blow out. So, even if you are camping on the windiest day of the year, with these candles in your supply box, you'll surely get that fire lit and maintained. These candles are available at Target stores and at novelty stores in your neighborhood.

Back to tents: Please know that you can go camping without spending lots of money. Just use your imagination, and you'll find a great way to go camping in a great campgrounds or state park. You can bring tarps and string and make your own tents. I did that once and it was very easy.

If you want life-long tents, I highly recommend a company called, Eureka. Eureka tents are the best!

Cost Benefits of Repairing Over Replacing Your iPod

The cost benefits of repairing your damaged iPod over purchasing a replacement model are immense. Many consumers are unaware of the fact that iPods can actually be repaired. Repairing your iPod can save a great deal of time, money, and aggravation. The Internet has a wide range of repair centers that offer both repair services and replacement parts for your iPod. The first thing you should do, if you accidentally damage your iPod, is to consider how you want to repair it. Repairing your device is the most economical method you can choose because the entire unit doesn't need to be replaced. Replacing the entire unit would be a waste of time and money. Repairing your iPod will save you the expense of having to purchase a new unit at retail prices.

If your iPod is still under warranty, you can send it in to the manufacturer and have the damaged portion repaired typically for the cost of shipping. If your iPod is not under warranty, and this may be the case if you have experienced water damage, a cracked screen, or hard drive damage, then you should look to a third party repair company to save extensive repair costs. For those of us that would like to keep our iPod running for years this is the best repair option available.

Instead of having to shell out $250 dollars for a brand new iPod, when you send it in to a repair center it's just like getting a new model back. Sending the unit back to Apple after the warranty has expired is incredibly expensive, nearly $250 dollars! You could buy a brand new iPod for that! Why not use one of the professional repair shops on the Internet? These shops have technicians experienced in the repair of such devices. Often times you will find that these iPod repair centers also offer warranties on their work. The repair shops generally offer cheaper rates and will have your item back to you in a matter of a few days rather than weeks. What do you have to lose? You can either keep your repaired iPod or sell it. It will be worth much more in working condition and many iPods still retain their value today. In fact, some iPods have actually gone up in price due to their rarity. Additionally, older models iPods may even offer different features that are not available on the newer ones. Repairing your iPod in most cases is the smartest option to use.

You never know when you're going to experience damage to your iPod, so why not be prepared from the beginning? It pays to do some research as to the best repair shops that offer high quality repair service at affordable prices. If you're a tech wiz you can find the necessary parts to make the repairs on your own. Be careful when looking to purchase parts as there are a lot of part dealers on places like Ebay that don't tell you all the necessary information for making such a repair. It is recommended to use a reputable repair center that will give you the correct parts and information for your specific repair. Repairing the unit yourself isn't without risks and extensive damage to the unit is possible. You could save money over sending it in for repairs but you may also damage additional parts while attempting repair. Most people refuse to run the risk of further damage and mail it in for repairs right away which is generally the best choice for today's consumer.

Goals, Dreams and Hopes - Where Do You Begin? Start Writing

What kinds of articles do you appreciate reading and what moves you the most when it comes to inspiration and knowledge? We are all different in this world. There are no two individuals completely alike. And that is proven by so many scientists who have tested and re-tested twins. Yes even twins are not alike in every single way. So, that is why your writing is unique. You have a unique brain, therefore your writing is unique also. What a wonderful world we live in to have so many wonderful people, all with different brains and different experiences who are able to access this website and to make their opinions known to all of us.

Have you ever read any writing that has brought you to tears? Have you ever read any book or article that has brought you to immediate action or at least to the thought of taking immediate action. Now, that is real writing. When you experience those two things, you have experienced the effect of a writer that tells the truth, tells about life the way it is and has no hesitation about being themselves. Hopefully, before you read any further articles on the net, you will find here many articles, perhaps hundreds that will change your ideas, change your thinking or that will get your thinking --and your projects into quick action.

Inspirational writing rocks. We, all of us, human beings in this world , have at one time or another experienced inspirational writing that has brought us to action. And that is somewhat what I try to achieve when I write. So, you say, my writing does not sound inspirational or wise even? That is okay for you to think that. For what I am thinking about is ALL of my writring, not just my writing at this particular website. So, all in all, when I think about every little word that I write and about my own websites, I can honestly say that I strive to influence people.

So why do you write? Ask yourself that question and then you will find your directions and your goals . Our goals often come out when we write. It is kind of silly or kind of strange, but writing is a way that we can remind ourselves of things and also a way that we can communicate positive things to ourselves perhaps when the outside world is trying to influence us in other directions. Perhaps we want to go in another direction but the world, and society have their own idea of what our importance in this world should be. I say go with your gut instinct. That is it. Listen to yourself and no matter what you write, it probably will be inspirational and goal-setting. Thank you for taking the time to read here.

A Dog's Life Is Never Easy, What About Yours?

Every day is different but every day is the same. Sure that sounds contradictory to you, but if you were chained to the fence, you probably would understand what that means.

I wake up in the morning, and within a short while I will be out in the great outdoors, chained to that fence again. Though every day of life is different for all kinds of life and people, every day begins the same for me. I wear a thick collar that is attached to a leash and that leash is attached to the fence in the yard. No one seems to notice that I'm freezing. I am cold and so many times, I am so hungry and thirsty.

It does not matter what the temperature is, this is my home for all day and some of the night. Chain is my home, the fence is my headboard, and the dirt, filled with worms, parasites and other forms of life is my bed. Yes, of course, at night my bed changes. At night I get to go indoors and bring my worms and parasites into the house. But at least I am warm and sheltered from the elements in the late evening. Ahh, what a relief, finally indoors.

I had no idea when I came here that I would be an outdoors person, but that happened, against my will of course.

People passing by the house think that I am happy on this chain because they think the chain makes me safe. Wrong! They never stop and really think about it. How can I be safe chained to a fence? What a ridiculous thought. Would you feel safe if someone chained you up outside of your own home? Honestly, answer that.

How safe would you feel if you were chained to a fence outside your home? And what about the rest of my normal life? How would you feel if:

If you had to carry fleas, parasites and other life on your back into where you sleep at night?

If you could not get away or protect yourself if a raccoon or other wild animal attacked you while you were chained to that fence all day?

If it began raining and you had nowhere to go?

If you had to sleep on wet dirt when it rained or snowed?

If you had to just stay there while kids and adults teased and bothered you?

If your chain was not long enough to reach where the food and water bowls are?

If you just wanted to go indoors and rest for a while but you were not allowed to?

Seriously, how would you feel if those things happened to you? And yet, to me, they happen all the time. My chain is my prison. They think that this is my daytime home - the yard. But if it truly was my home there would be no metal chain around my neck? Do you wear a metal chain on your neck --that is attached to a fence -in your "home"?

How would you feel if you were forced into this cold, harsh reality every day of your life? And what about the myths? Ah, you have heard the myths haven't you?

What about these?

Dogs love the outdoors. (Yes, of course they love the outdoors, but they do not love being chained in the outdoors. Being chained outdoors is no different than humans being chained to their homes or fences). The only difference is that the dog cannot speak out, protest or tell you this. They just "adjust" to the situation and live with it -because they have no choice.

Dogs need the chain for their protection so that they don't run away and get hit by cars. The chain that saves the dog from being hit by cars is the very same chain that holds the dog captive when squirrels, raccoons, possums and other animals attack them and fight with them.

It's only for a short time. (You try a chain around your neck for a while and tell me how long an hour feels like. Ten minutes with a chain on your neck feels like a lifetime. No joke).

Dogs do not get cold. That's some myth. People say that dogs have their own "coat". Have you ever been outdoors wearing a coat and been cold? Yes, that happens. Just because dogs have fur that does not mean that they have no feelings or that they don't feel the cold.

It does not hurt the dog. Yes it hurts the dog and anyone that says this does not hurt them is telling you one big lie. Chains hurt. Even when they do not hurt physically (which some do), others hurt emotionally. And those emotional hurts are not visible to you but trust anyone that knows dogs, chains hurt.

There are many myths about dogs who are tied up outdoors and most of them are lies, yes outright lies. People need to feel that it is okay to chain a dog outdoors so they let themselves believe this myth. Bottom line is that no animal should be chained outdoors.

IF your dog is chained outdoors for most of the day, then you probably do not have time or attention for that dog. Just put yourself in his or her place and imagine being chained up for seven or eight hours a day. Now some that are into "s and m" might not find that a problem. But to the average human being, being chained up seven to eight hours a day, outdoors is just plain cruel. The person who sells you that myth that chaining is okay--is just wrong.

Take it from me, one small dog who is chained outdoors. Now you have just a bit of an inside look at the life of a chained up dog. Find a real home for me where I can go indoors and be a real part of the family. Yes, another myth. So many animal -lovers claim the dog is part of their own family. Yet, tell me this, how many family members do you have chained up outdoors in the rain? Only one, correct?

Take this time to find a home for your dog where he can go indoors, live indoors and not be chained up. You can do it -if you want to. To start, you might want to contact this great organization of truckers who transport animals across the United States of America.

Animal! Truths And Myths About Animals

It's plain, simple and easy to make a dog happy and to keep a dog healthy. This article is just a beginning -giving a few helpful hints on how to keep y our animals healthy and happy. Here goes:

Remember that dogs have feelings too. Treat them humanely - always.

Always check for fleas on a regular basis and handle the problem immediately as soon as you find any.

Bring the dog to the vets regularly just to be sure that everything is okay.

Never give chocolate to dogs as that can be fatal.

Train your dog to sleep on the floor, not on the bed with you. (If you want a healthy dog, first you need to be healthy yourself. Sleeping with dogs is not the healthiest thing for humans to do, most especially if you have 'outdoor dogs'). You can roll over on the dog in your sleep. You can get bitten (if you roll over on your dog). You will have dog hair all over your sheets (That is so not healthy). If you really need to sleep with your dog, then for goodness sakes, put his dog bed at the foot of your bed that keeps you both healthy.

Never use a chain on your dog outdoors when you are not there to supervise.

Know that dog food and water attracts wild animals to your dog if your dog is chained up outside when you are not around. This could lead your dog to get bitten by possums, raccoons, squirrels and other animals.

Know that your dog can bite children when chained outdoors. (No, it is not correct to think this is okay just because the dog is in your own yard). Dogs should be attended to --not left alone on chains. You cannot control children coming into your yard unless you have a fence that is locked, and even then some kids can and will climb over them. Remember the stories of those children that got into the bear homes at the zoo? Well, do not leave your dogs unattended outdoors. It just is not safe for them and not safe or healthy for anyone else.

What other ways can you keep your dog healthy, happy and safe? Some use electrical fences and there are varying opinions about that. I just wonder how natural it all is. A long time ago, I asked a friend why she did not have a pet if she loved them so much. She replied that she felt it was unfair to the animal since she just did not have time for it, to take care and to play with it. At that time I thought that answer was odd, because I thought, how can anyone not have time for an an animal. But that was when I was young and I did not understand exactly how much time, caring, effort and work it is to have an animal --and to keep that animal and keep those around that animal safe, sound, healthy and happy. Now, today, her answer seems really sensible to me.

So, perhaps if you need to use methods that hurt the dog or animal perhaps you do not have time for that animal either. That's just a thought. OF course it is better to think about that thought before you get an animal rather than after the fact. Take time for yourself first. And then if you really have time for yourself, then consider an animal for a pet --if that is really what you want.

Or, have animals in your life without the work or responsibility. Here are ways that you can do that:

Go window-shopping. Spend some free time looking at the puppies in the window. (That 's correct. Do not buy a puppy).

Go to the zoo or wildlife conservation center a few times a year.

Go into large stores like Petco and places like that . You can view all types of animals there all during the year.

Go on class trips to aquariums, zoos or wildlife centers.

When you go on vacation, visit the aquariums and zoos wherever you go.

Dog-sit or cat-sit for your neighbors, friends or relatives.

Volunteer at an animal shelter or some other organization that helps animals.

Join that organization that trains dogs to help handicapped people

Find a job in a vet's office or some other place of business that treats or serves the animal population.

Those are ways you can have animals in your life but not have the personal responsibility of caring for, raising or sheltering an animal in your home. Those are just ideas. It is extremely important that care is used for indoor dogs -when they have accidents indoors. So many times, children can get infected or get disease when they have contact with dogs fecal matter. This comes from cleaning up after dogs. Read this article for more information about some diseases that can be transmitted to humans through the fecal matter.

Here is a link to an article about one parasitic disease that some dogs get and carry. There have been children who have gotten this disease from dogs. (And, yes, children can have other diseases from dogs). This link is from b-net.

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly - Lesson Six - TV Production

I hope you enjoy this series of articles about Television Production. Your comments, notes, and ratings are appreciated. You have the power to change anything in these articles. To submit your ideas or suggestions send an email to us. Being a television producer since before the year 2001, I know a little about television production. And I am willing to share my experience from a social (rather than technical) point of view with my readers.

Many years ago, there was a movie called, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. What does this have to do with television production at the community level, or even sometimes at the major network level? I was sitting here contemplating what my next article would be and all of a sudden, just thinking about television, I thought of the title of that movie. I have not seen the movie but I related the title to television production. That's what you will probably see or hear about in community access television. This particular subject is a very necessary one if anyone is going to print the truth about community access television. And if you cannot write the truth, then why write? So, here goes, I offer to you a glimpse into the good, the bad and the ugly of community access television. I will change one thing about the title in that I will reverse the order in which I speak about these particular divisions of community access television production. I will talk about "The Bad, The Ugly and the Good". I reverse the order to end this article on a positive note instead of ending it on "The Ugly".

The Bad

What is the bad part about being active in community television? There are many bad parts of it, and I will attempt to list them and or explain them here in this section called, "The Bad". If you become active in public community access television, you could or might see these things happen:

Producers arguing with other producers; producers talking behind other producers' backs, producers arguing with talent and or with guests or hosts or anyone else involved in community access television, producers exhibiting subtle (if any such thing) hints of racist words, expressions or feelings and anger or even hatred of other human beings.
The Ugly

The ugly is just as bad as the bad, but possibly more ugly in that it steps up a bit more, one more rung on the ladder of discontent, anger, disconnection, breaking down team morale, and judging people by whom they are, what they wear, how they speak and more than that; There could be ugly scenes of other producers actually going at each other to the point of physical violence, verbal violence and other forms of disrespect for human beings and society in general. You might have to contend with people using racist expressions, terms or words, or other "ist" put downs. Perhaps the ugliest of them all is when other good producers run to the support or aid of the producers who were suspended, without fully knowing exactly what happened to have the person suspended. You might have to see producers yelling at or putting the staff down, you might have to see producers totally losing their tempers, and see some out-of-control. Another ugliest is when some producers automatically assume that employees, staff or administrators judged a producer unfairly, yet, they still do not have the whole story straight but they begin to stir up the soup by making the assumption that the offending producers were wrongly suspended.

Basically, the ugly comes from deep inside of a person. A person can have physical beauty or be good-looking physically but that same person can be so deeply ugly inside that the physical beauty eventually begins to mean nothing and do nothing for the person. This is especially true if you think about realities of life in that eventually, all physical beauty naturally fades away. However, those people that have a great beauty inside their hearts, minds and spirits will always be attractive to us in our world. So, knowing this and remembering this will help us in our television production roles. Try and be a person who is beautiful inside, through and through, no matter what your outside looks like. Even though most in television are seeking that outside beauty, remember that true, sincere beauty and excellence is deep in your own heart. We have all seen those people that give a good outwards appearance and when we get to know them more, we see the ugliness inside of them. This is not to say that only beautiful people are ugly but this is saying that no matter what the outside appearance, we need to really get to know people, to be connected with people, and really observe what people do, how people act, before we discern if these are the types of individuals that we seek to work with in our television careers or hobbies. Never let someone's outside appearance permit you to reject someone or to accept someone. Look deeper than that.

The Learning: Some producers learn at a different rate than others do. I am in that group of producers that learn slowly, however, once i have learned the subject, I am reliable, dependable and extremely helpful. It is because of this and because of observing other students and producers that I know that good production is not always in doing everything fast as lightening speed. Sometimes you can have a producer who does thing fast but does not do a good job or does not do the job you were expecting them to do. So speed is not the main object in production, perhaps accuracy, common courtesy, respect and teamwork might be better options when trying to produce a good show. A large part of the learning that must be done is learning which producers will work as a team and which producers will work like that celebrity basketball player who thinks that every shot, every move, everything in the game is up to him and only him. We have all seen that kind of egotism at work. And that is not the kind of production that you want for your own shows if you want to have a lasting, professional studio show.

Bragging You Know It All: Probably one of the most dangerous people in your cast of producers is the one that thinks and states (by actions and sometimes by indirect words ) that he is the one that knows it all; he is the one that is right and no one else can do anything correctly. The sad thing is that in the middle of productions when things mess up because of his egotism, no one notices it because they are too busy with other things in production. For example, once I was working cg and I was given a list of names. I thought that one named seemed to be incorrectly spelled and talking out loud to myself, I said, I think this is spelled wrong. The audio guy next to me insisted that it was spelled correctly. And he said it in such a tone as if he was right without a doubt about it, demanding that I type it in the cg like it was spelled on the paper. I still had this gut instinct that the spelling might be wrong (notice I said might be). So, against the audio guy's advice (and he was not the director), I got up and went to check the spelling with the guest. Sure enough the spelling was incorrect. Now had I been a new producer I would have probably taken the audio guy's advice to leave it spelled the way it was, and the guest's name would have been spelled incorrectly on the show.

But the point of this story is that it is not up to the audio guy or any other guy to tell the cg person how anything is spelled. It didn't bother me that he told me that the spelling was correct the way it was, but what bothered me was his "higher than mighty" attitude and tone of voice that almost demanded that I leave it spelled that way. I am sure that any new producer would have listened to this guy. And the flack would have been on the cg person for spelling the name incorrectly. That taught me a lesson. Or, rather reminded me, always listen to your gut instinct. My gut instinct told me that I thought that name looked funny and it looked incorrect. Listening to my gut instinct and not listening to the audio guy, that saved my cg title from being incorrect.

There are times when I will make a mistake, and there are times when other producers will make mistakes and those are okay. Every human makes a mistake here and there. If you do not make any mistakes then you simply are not human. There are NO perfect producers. The point that I am writing about is that attitude is everything. Your attitude and my attitude can make or break the show. There are so many ways that a show can be sabotaged, both directly and indirectly. As an executive producer you need to look out for what is happening and protect your show by joining with good, creative, productive and respectful students and producers.

That guy had the attitude that he knows best, that he was most experienced, and I had the attitude that I wasn't sure but that I was willing to check it out first and then see what was correct and what was not correct. If you have the attitude that you are above the other producers or better than the other producers, then you are the one that is incorrect. I do not care how many years you are there, you have the same rights and privileges that all the other producers have. You might have a few more years experience but no amount of years experience tells you that you can spell a person's name better than the person who owns the name. That was only one experience with this guy who seems to know it all.

The Difference: Now there is a difference in knowing it all (having the knowledge and hands-on experience and years) and bragging, boasting or being arrogant about knowing it all. You know the difference. Just look around you and observe the attitudes and personalities of the producers that you work with. Do you see any arrogant producers who reek of that hey, you are doing it all wrong; I know better than that? Time and experience in the studio will tell, and eventually you will be able to decipher between producers who are sincerely helping and doing their best and the others who would rather be a team of their own and tell everyone else what to do even though they are not the director.

Protecting Your Show: For my own show, I use only team players. And the group of team players is a good mix of both seasoned and newer producers. That mix works well. No know-it-alls need apply. All of my producers are excellent people. For your show, seek out team players, and people who are sincere in doing their job and who are willing to learn (but not during production). You are better off with five new producers or two new producers or even one new producer than you are with one Mr. Know-it-All . Yes, we need the people who know it all , but there are enough people who know it all who are team players, who are not egotistical , so focus on getting good team players for your show and you will do just fine. Many times for my shows, I have experienced people along with newer producers and they are all team players interested in doing a good show. That is what you need.

The Good

I save the good for last, because this is the sparkling best side of public community access television production and it shines over everything in such a glowing way that producers stay and put up with the nonsense that they see in the rear-view mirrors. They stay with community access because they know these things:

Community access television has some of the most powerful voices in this city.

Community access instructors are the best.

Community access training is the best training you can get for the lowest price that is available to anyone who lives in the borough.

Community access television shows are not controlled by what a sponsor wants on television but controlled by what the executive producer wants on television.

Community access television gives thousands of voices to thousands of people throughout the city and by way of the net, throughout the world.

Some community access television producers are the most responsible, most creative, most loving, warm individuals that are around in the television production business.

Community access television is an education while you are in training and an on-the-job type training while you continue to produce television shows and help others produce shows.

Air time on Time Warner or Cablevision is a very valuable asset, and community access gives everyone the opportunity for that valuable asset for themselves.

By watching community access, you can learn things like language, reading and other business lessons. The community access calendar of shows fills your days and weeks with love, laughter, information, education and resources and music.

When you become a community access television producer, you will guaranteed meet some of the most interesting people in the world, in your lifetime. People who travel the whole world over still have not met such an interesting bunch of human beings.

So as you see the good really outnumbers the rest of what happens in some community access studios. You may have about one or two hundred professional producers and might have one or two that lose their tempers. So clearly the good outnumber the bad and the ugly. I have worked with so many wonderful producers over the years, so that I know there is an abundance of good producers out there, we just need to find them, locate them and connect with them. That takes time but the time we spend doing that is all worth it.

The Best: In my experience, some of the best times that I have had in television production has been working with new producers. They are ready to go, willing and able to usually tackle any job in production. They have fresh energy, ideas and usually most of them are willing to cooperate and help out wherever needed. Recently I did a production where most of the crew was new. It turned out to be a good experience. The production went well; we all got along great and the finished product was an awesome television show. The key is combining new and experienced producers in one show. Everyone helps each other. And there is at least one or two seasoned producers who are there to smooth out any rough edges (if there are any). My most recent show was done in that way, with a mix of seasoned and new producers. Mission accomplished!

If you are thinking of becoming a community access producer, try it out; see if you like it. Just be careful. Remember everyone is not like you, so let others earn your trust. Do not give it freely. Let them earn it and let people know that your trust is a very valuable asset. That's community access television for you, the bad, the ugly and most of all, most important, THE GOOD! In some of our upcoming articles, I will express ideas and suggestions on how to handle the bad and the ugly.

On a last note - not about self-promotion but about feelings, and about emotions, and dealing with handling a large amount of video productions each and every year, here are my feelings: I have made my own share of mistakes and I am sure that I will make more. However, I am happy with my work because first I begin with honesty, integrity and respect. That makes me happy. When I find producers who can work with that, that makes me even more happy.

Ask yourself these questions:

Have you ever worked on a set where the producer was rude, or yelling? Have you ever worked on a set with a producer who constantly blew his stack? If so, then what was your reaction to that? I would guess that most would never go back to work with that same producer. So, learn from everyone's experiences. If you want to keep your workers or volunteers, then keep a guard on your temper. That is lesson number one in good television production. Respect everyone and give everyone respect. There is no excuse for anything less than that!
